About the club
A not-for-profit, self-help club on the west side of Kettle Creek, maintained by its members since 1933. We have reciprocal agreements with clubs across the Great Lakes and welcome travelling boaters every season.
Why “Kanagio”?
Kanagio is an Oneida word meaning “kettle”. Indigenous people called the creek Kanagio Creek, and settlers called it Kettle Creek. The founders gave the club the original name.
More than 90 years on the creek
The club started as a small sailing club for the well-off. Today it has 62 active members, plus associate and honorary members, and is one of the best-kept secrets on the north shore of Lake Erie.
1933
W.A. Childs and a few friends form a 30-member sailing club.
1934
The first clubhouse opens at the end of Main Street.
1930s
The club moves three times as it looks for a permanent home.
1950s
The club settles at Stan’s Marina. Boats anchor mid-creek and members row a dinghy back and forth.
1968
KYC moves to its present site on land rented from the Ultramar Oil Company.
1987
The club buys the land.
1995
The clubhouse is renovated. A storage garage, gazebo and a better launch well follow over the years.
Our mission
We aspire with the help of our members to create a premier private yacht club that promotes responsible boating coupled with positive social experiences.
The club’s purposes, from its constitution
- 1.Encourage all phases of boating on Lake Erie and related waterways.
- 2.Promote a high standard of skill and seamanship in the handling of craft.
- 3.Secure honourable conduct in all activity and competition.
- 4.Foster a friendly and cooperative spirit among members.
- 5.Cultivate fraternal relations with other yachting organizations.
- 6.Maintain proper facilities for the recreation of members on a not-for-profit basis.
