2023 at KYC was another great year

The increasing silting along the members’ slips had reached a critical point, necessitating the club’s decision to undertake dredging of the creek. Given the limited options for contractors experienced in handling such tasks on Kettle Creek, a local firm was chosen for the job. Remarkably, they not only completed the assignment in a remarkably short time but also left the site in excellent condition. This marked a significant improvement over the last dredging effort, and the costs came in well below the initial estimates.

As the boats were launched into the water in spring, there was a noticeable difference: ample water under the hulls and propellers, bringing satisfaction to all members. This successful dredging project not only addressed the immediate issue of silting but also showcased the club’s commitment to efficient management of its facilities for the benefit of all.

Sunday, April 23rd, and it is cold, dreary and the boats are for the most part still covered in plastic, waiting for the warm weather to show up. However, it is time to clean up the parklike setting at Kanagio and get ready for the 2023 boating season. Dressed for the weather, members gathered around for a hot dog and a drink and talked about what was to come.

Fleet Captain Adam Barton, in his first year, was given significant new challenges, with the club undertaking dredging of the dock areas, a number of new members requiring dockage, and existing members acquiring new and larger boats.

We extend our gratitude to the Dock Installation Crew for their resilience in facing the cold and navigating potential hazards associated with their task. Special recognition goes to Mike Weaver, who leads the crew, ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Our heartfelt thanks also go to Carl Lee, Rick Huisman, Rick Sutherland, Jeff Wallace and Murray MacDonald, whose collective efforts contribute significantly to preparing Kanagio for a summer of boating.

The London Chapter of the Canadian Power Squadron attended at the club on June 20th to undertake a free equipment safety inspection of members’ boats. Upon successful completion of the inspection, members were given a certificate and sticker, which is then displayed on their boat for all to see.

Thanks go out to KYC member Brian Butler for coordinating the event. KYC member Carl Lee, along with Power Squadron members Barry Kay, Karen Conner and Bev Miatello, undertook the inspections. The squadron also provided participants with lunch, which was cooked by Commander Alice Barata and Nick Barata. Our thanks go out to the London Chapter, and we look forward to seeing them again in 2024.

Mike Kingswood, Brian Butler, Sherry Kingswood and Dave Tippett, members of Kanagio, successfully underwent the inspection, securing the 2023 inspection sticker. Special appreciation goes to Karen Conner and Bev Miatello, fellow squadron members, for their assistance during the inspection and for providing valuable insights into boating safety requirements for our members. The first event of the year marked a unique blend of culinary innovation and venue transformation. The clubhouse underwent a metamorphosis to mirror the ambiance of a restaurant, featuring an exclusive menu focused on spaghetti and lasagna. This gathering operated on a pay-for basis, achieving financial equilibrium thanks to the committed members who invested not only in the days leading up to the event but also worked tirelessly throughout the entire Saturday to ensure its success.

Neil Enns, in collaboration with Ilona, took the lead in coordinating the function and skillfully crafted the delectable sauce for the spaghetti. Tables adorned with carefully chosen decorations provided a charming backdrop for members and friends to come together, savour the delicious meal and desserts, and partake in socializing. The libations, including specially crafted red and white wine by KYC members Brad and Maurica Ryan, the proprietors of Ryan’s Cellar, added an extra touch of sophistication.

The triumph of the event was the result of a collective effort, with special acknowledgment to members such as Michael and Sherry Kingswood, Tony and Carolyn Theunissen, Mark and Lisa Gardner, Susi Hodgins, Dale Pitcher, Kelly Blake, Ken and Cindy Saunders, Jeff Locke and Rich Banman. Their invaluable contributions not only enhanced the success of the event but also earned them significant work hours in the process.

The restaurant set-up for the clubhouse proved a success, and everyone enjoyed a great meal and an opportunity to socialize with old friends.

The inaugural paid club event of the year took place with the July 1st Steak Barbecue. Attendees, comprising both members and guests, indulged in a delectable 10-ounce striploin, complemented by baked potatoes, salad, rolls and delightful desserts. The unique twist to this event was that members and guests had the chance to personally grill their steaks to perfection, tailored to their preferences. This event marked the kickoff of paid functions for the year, consistently attracting an outstanding turnout.

The clubhouse was once again transformed into a restaurant-style setting, providing members with the enjoyable opportunity to gather with members and guests, savour a superb meal, and relish the atmosphere.

August saw the annual Port Stanley Calipso Festival take place, and several Kanagio members participated in the boat parade. Members gathered to create a historic presentation, a floating Port Stanley Terminal Rail train.

KYC members Dale and Linda Pitcher and their crew captured the first-place prize for the best decorated boat in the parade. The theme of the boat was YMCA, performed by the Village People.

The 2023 Commodores Ball, a prestigious event held in honour of the esteemed KYC 2023 Commodore, Mr. Rick Banman, and Lady Donna Banman, unfolded with grandeur at the enchanting CASO Station in St. Thomas on the memorable evening of November 18th.

The banquet was orchestrated flawlessly by Kathy’s Catering, renowned for their culinary mastery. Departing from tradition, the historic beef meal was transformed into a delectable buffet dinner, featuring an array of sumptuous dishes. Guests indulged in succulent roasted turkey paired with savoury stuffing and rich gravy, complemented by the tangy sweetness of cranberries. Side offerings included creamy mashed potatoes, refreshing cabbage salad, and vibrant beet and carrot salad, all topped off with a refreshing mixed greens salad.

The culinary delights didn’t end there. Dessert was a delightful affair, with the tantalizing sticky toffee pudding stealing the spotlight. A fresh fruit platter added a burst of freshness, while coffee and tea provided the perfect conclusion to the gastronomic journey.

Following the formalities and speeches that paid tribute to Mr. Rick Banman and Lady Donna Banman’s remarkable contributions, guests were treated to captivating entertainment that set the stage alive with music and laughter, ensuring an unforgettable evening for all in attendance.

As the night unfolded, laughter echoed and glasses clinked in celebration of camaraderie and achievement. The 2023 Commodores Ball proved to be a fitting tribute to Mr. Rick Banman and Lady Donna Banman, honouring their dedication and leadership with elegance and style. It was a night to remember, filled with warmth, camaraderie, and the joy of shared moments that will be cherished for years to come.

A standout moment of the evening unfolds during the presentation of the prestigious Rex Rand Award, an honour bestowed upon a dedicated Kanagio Yacht Club member (or members) for their invaluable contributions to the club’s success. In this instance, it recognizes tireless efforts in rectifying damaged electrical equipment along the docks and repairing the access gate. With great pride, Bob emerges as the deserving recipient of this accolade at the Commodores Ball.

Bob has been a member of KYC since July 2005. During this time, Bob has always been prepared to offer a helping hand with projects around the club.

Congratulations, Bob, from all of your friends at Kanagio. Well deserved! Bob and his boat can be found at dock 43.

A fun time was had by all at the first KYC New Year’s party. Happy New Year, and looking forward to a great 2024 boating season.
